Our mission
The Northgate Housing Authority provides safe, decent and affordable housing to low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities, and connects residents with opportunities to build stable, independent lives.
Our history
The authority was created by the City of Northgate under New Jersey's housing authorities law and opened its first development, Liberty Village, in 1952. Riverside Gardens followed in 1968, Harbor View in 1971 and Maple Court, our building for seniors and people with disabilities, in 1974. In the 1980s we added scattered-site family homes across the city, and Harbor View was converted under HUD's Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) to secure its long-term repair.
What we do
- Own and manage public housing at five developments
- Run the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program with private landlords
- Repair and modernize our buildings with HUD's Capital Fund
- Offer Family Self-Sufficiency, youth and senior programs
By the numbers
- 5 developments, about 560 public housing apartments
- About 240 Housing Choice Vouchers
- Roughly 1,000 households and 2,300 people served
- About 60 employees
Board of Commissioners
Seven commissioners govern the authority: five appointed by the City Council, one by the Mayor, and one appointed by the State of New Jersey. At least one commissioner is a resident. The Board meets in public on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm — see Board meetings.
