How the waiting lists work

Each program keeps its own waiting list. You may apply to every list that is open; applying to one does not affect your place on another.

We take a short pre-application first. We do not decide whether you are eligible until your name nears the top of the list and we invite you to a full eligibility interview.

When a list opens we announce it here, in the news on this site, in local newspapers and through community partners, with the dates and how to apply. Some openings use a lottery to set the order of applicants; the opening notice says when.

Applying is free. Nobody can sell you a place on a waiting list or speed up your application — report anyone who asks for money.

  • Public Housing: Applicants are ranked by preference points, then by the date and time their application was received.
  • Housing Choice Voucher: Applicants are ranked by preference points, then by the date and time their application was received.
  • Project-Based Voucher: Applicants are ranked by preference points, then by the date and time their application was received.

Preferences

Preferences move qualifying applicants ahead of others on the list. They are set in our ACOP and HCV Administrative Plan and verified before admission. Points can add together.

Documents to have ready

You do not need these documents to submit a pre-application. Gather them now so you are ready when you are selected.
  • Photo identification for every adult in the household
  • Social Security cards (or other proof of the number) for everyone who has one
  • Birth certificates for every household member
  • Proof of citizenship or eligible immigration status
  • Proof of all income: pay stubs, benefit letters (SSI, SSDI, TANF, unemployment), child support, pensions
  • Bank statements and information on any other assets
  • Proof of childcare and, for elderly or disabled families, medical expenses
  • Documents supporting any preference you claim
  • Current landlord’s name and address, and previous addresses for the past several years

Keeping your application active

  • Report any change of address, phone number or email, and changes to your household size or income, in writing or through the applicant portal.
  • Answer every letter we send. If mail is returned or you do not respond by the deadline, your application may be removed from the list.
  • We may ask you to update your application periodically to stay on the list.
  • If you need a reasonable accommodation because of a disability, or help in another language, tell us — at any point in the process.
